From what I have been told, executives, agents, and some producers no longer want to read spec scripts. I think it's because they are bored reading them. Everyone specs the same shows. People get tired of reading dozens of spec episodes of The Office and 30 Rock. I also suspect that people in the industry no longer watch other series. How can you tell if you're reading a good spec of Modern Family if you never watch it? The new idea seems to be, "Blow me away with a spec pilot." I think the gate keepers who decline to read spec episodes are foolish, but it's up to them.
Community and Parks and Recreation have recently gotten popular with critics. That may be part of the reason that these series are now the hot spec with agents and executives. Agents and executives always have to feel they're on to the new thing. A lot of younger viewers enjoy those series, which may also contribute to their sudden cache. It's also likely that there are fewer specs of these series in circulation. Reply to this
